Chapter Seven

Cherry donned jeans and a white peasant shirt and threaded a shimmering purple scarf through the belt loops. It felt good to be back in her trailer, back among her things, her friends.

Yet after only a day, she missed Jason.

She tidied her breakfast dishes, slipped on her sneakers and headed for her tent on the midway. Made of red canvas, it was six by eight feet and seven feet high. Last night, she’d pitched the tent and moved over the tables and chairs she used. Today, she’d place the furniture and decorate with posters and scarves. Her crystal ball she carried back and forth.

By midmorning, she had the lunar and tarot posters in place and scarves draped artistically along the back and sides to create a mystical atmosphere. She tied back the two front flaps, then fed two sheer gold panels on to a curtain rod.

Working from the middle, she attempted to lodge the rod into the upper front corners. For some reason, the left side refused to catch. She shifted and shoved to no avail. Mumbling unmentionable words under her breath, she rose on her toes and pushed hard. And would have fallen except hard arms caught her around the waist.

She twisted to look up into Jason’s blue-gray eyes. “Hello.”

“Hey.” He set her on her feet. “Looks like you need help.”

Tugging her shirt into place, she eyed his six-foot-plus frame with appreciation. In khaki pants and a short-sleeved white polo shirt, he looked cool and collected. And just what she needed.

“From a handsome man with a long reach? Oh yeah.” She picked up the rod. “Grab that end. It goes as high into that corner as you can get.”

He went to his corner and she took the other end, but it still wouldn’t fit. She met his gaze across the short distance. “The two halves must have come unclicked.”

“I’ll fix it.” He found the middle, made the adjustment and a moment later they had the rod in place. The sheer gold panels flowed to the ground, casting the tent into a gilded haven of privacy.

“What are you doing here?” Tempted by his unexpected closeness but conscious of their agreement to keep to their own worlds, she stuffed her hands into her back pockets and rocked on her heels.

He pulled his gaze from an inspection of the tent to focus on her. “I need your help.”

“Oh?”

Hands at his waist, he raked her with a look that meant trouble, pure and simple. His slow grin held a sheepish quality. “Exactly what are princess shoes?”

Her insides melted and her will weakened.

Not good. Not good at all. She’d missed him, yeah, but with cooler hormones and a clear head, she saw the wisdom of staying on her side of the ticket booth.

Yet how did she deny a father’s plea? And really, what harm was there in spending a few minutes in his company?

“Princess shoes are little girl high heels decorated with feathers or fake gems.”

He looked truly appalled. “Tell me you’re kidding.”

She laughed, enjoying his dismay.
